Last week ADstruc collaborated with, Tronic Studios and GoldRun for the unique GPS Augmented Reality app and thru this collaboration a new dimension to Outdoor Advertising was born – Augmented Reality Advertising. The idea of taking a traditional billboard and making it digital. Using mobile to take the physical space digital is a growing trend to those in the mobile technology space, as they are trying to merge the static world with the digital world, while using mobile technology as the digital platform. Rather than the more obvious – making the sign digital, which is cost prohibitive these days and not allowed in most areas of NYC outside of Times Square, still is a long way out.
The trick here is pretty simple and if you have the mobile app – it’s a cool experience. The billboard is GPS tagged and a number of different images are selected to appear at the same site thru the mobile app, making it more interactive than normal augmented reality applications. The billboard used, which sits near the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, simply reads ‘Today I’m Feeling _____’. Drivers stuck in a jam or people passing by can see if the billboard is happy or sad or, whether it feels like dancing or cheering on its favorite team. The unique combination of Emotion, Mobile apps and billboard advertising create an augmented reality that will lead to other opportunistic media companies looking at this as a possible form of advertising.
