Disney wouldn’t be the first to install an augmented reality spectacle in a well-traveled public space. And Disney wouldn’t even be the first to do it in Times Square. But just the same, this weekend, the corporation Mickey Mouse built hopped on the A/R bandwagon to celebrate the 83rd birthday of said rodent with a 60-foot digital, interactive billboard (see video above).
Tourists passing by (locals are too busy for this kind of thing) were able to actually stop and interact with virtual Disney characters that could only be seen up on that big screen (similar to the process many actors go through these days when they perform opposite a special effect).
In Disneyland and Disney World, actual sweating humans buried in furry Disney costumes are employed to walk around the park and do the same thing as these virtual performers. And yet, the digital versions seem much more fun to us. Make mental note to selves.
